TL;DR

  • The cheapest cloud SMS API by published US rate is Bird at $0.0035 a segment, then Telnyx at $0.004. Add the carrier fee and the number and the gap between the cheap and the expensive cloud providers is smaller than the sticker prices suggest: about $9.50 to $14 for 1,000 messages a month.
  • The cheapest way to send at small and mid volume is not a per-message API at all. A flat plan that runs on your own Android phone is $0 for up to 300 messages a month, $14.99 for up to 5,000 and $29.99 for up to 25,000, with no carrier fee, no number rental and no 10DLC registration.
  • Below about 1,000 messages a month, the difference is a few dollars either way. From 5,000 up, the flat plan is about 60 to 90% cheaper than any cloud API in this list.
  • Cheap has limits. A phone sends 10 to 15 messages a minute and needs a SIM and consent-compliant content. Past tens of thousands of messages a month, or with delivery SLAs, a cloud API is the right tool and Telnyx or Bird are the cheapest of them.

All prices are US rates and were checked on the dates in the notes column. Rates change; every provider row links to its pricing page.

What "cheapest" has to include

An SMS API's advertised price is the base rate per message segment. Three more lines land on the invoice:

  1. Carrier fees. US carriers charge a per-segment surcharge on application traffic (10DLC). T-Mobile and Verizon publish $0.0045 a segment, AT&T $0.0035. Most providers pass it through; some fold it into a combined rate.
  2. Number rental. A long code is $0.50 to $1.15 a month per number, and you need at least one.
  3. Registration. US A2P traffic on a rented number needs 10DLC registration: a one-time brand fee (typically $4.50), one-time campaign vetting (typically $15) and a recurring campaign fee of roughly $1.50 to $10 a month.

A phone-based gateway sends from the SIM in an Android phone. That is a consumer line, so none of the three exist. The only per-message cost is what your phone plan charges for a text, which on an unlimited plan is $0.

The table below adds lines 1 and 2 to every row so the totals compare like for like. Registration is left out because it varies by campaign type; add $5 to $10 a month to every cloud row for it.

Below 300 messages a month the Free plan is $0. Yearly billing brings Pro to $8.33 and Scale to $16.67 a month. Your SIM plan's text rate still applies

What the totals say at each tier:

  • 1,000 messages a month. Bird and Telnyx are about $8 to $9.50, Twilio is about $14, and textbee Pro is $14.99, or $8.33 a month billed yearly. At this volume pick on features, not price. If you send under 300 a month, textbee's Free plan is $0 and nothing else in the list is.
  • 5,000 messages a month. The cheapest cloud API (Telnyx) is about $43.50; textbee Pro is $14.99, which is 66% less. Against Twilio at about $65 it is 77% less.
  • 25,000 messages a month. Telnyx is about $213.50 and Twilio about $321; textbee Scale is $29.99, which is 86% and 91% less.

Run your own volume through the SMS cost calculator; it uses the same per-provider numbers.

Cheapest cloud SMS API: Bird and Telnyx

If a phone is not an option (you need carrier-grade throughput, a short code, or a country where you have no SIM), these two are the cheapest cloud APIs with a published rate.

Telnyx lists $0.004 per message part and passes the carrier fee through at cost as a separate line, so the invoice is legible. It owns its network, has REST and SMPP, and the portal assumes you know telecom terms. Best for technical teams sending real volume that want the lowest fully published cost.

Bird (formerly MessageBird) lists $0.0035 a segment on a US long code, which is under half of Twilio's base rate. The carrier fee and the number charge live on other pages, so budget from all three before you commit. Best for support teams that also want the unified inbox and flow builder.

Plivo is the easiest drop-in Twilio replacement at about 10% less than Twilio. Sinch, AWS and Vonage cluster around Twilio's price and win on reach or on being inside a stack you already use, not on cost.

Cheapest SMS gateway: your own Android phone

textbee runs an app on an Android phone with a SIM and puts a REST API, webhooks and a dashboard in front of it. The price is a flat plan for the platform:

PlanPriceMessages a monthDevices
Free$0300 (50 a day)1
Pro$14.995,000up to 5
Scale$29.9925,000up to 15

Yearly billing brings Pro to $8.33 a month ($99.99 a year) and Scale to $16.67 a month ($199.99 a year).

Because the sender is a consumer SIM, there is no carrier surcharge, no number rental and no 10DLC registration, and recipients see a real number they can reply to. The message itself costs what your plan charges for a text. It is open source (MIT), so you can also self-host the server and pay nothing for the platform.

The free SMS API page has the exact free-tier limits and a send sample; the pricing page has the paid plans.

When the cheapest option is the wrong one

Cheap is only cheap if it does the job. Choose a cloud API instead of a phone when:

  • Volume is high. One phone sends roughly 10 to 15 messages a minute, so 25,000 messages is 30 to 40 phone-hours. Paid plans allow more devices to spread it, but at 100,000 or more a month a carrier route is the right tool.
  • You need a short code or a branded sender ID. A SIM sends from its own number, full stop.
  • You have delivery SLAs or compliance audits that require carrier-grade delivery receipts and registered sender identity.
  • You send marketing at scale. Carriers filter spam-like patterns on consumer SIMs. Transactional traffic (codes, receipts, reminders, alerts) and small campaigns with consent are what a phone gateway is for.

For everything under those lines, which is most transactional SMS for most apps, the flat plan is the cheapest SMS API you can buy from about 2,000 messages a month up, and the free tier is the only $0 one that sends to real numbers.

How to check a provider's real price yourself

  1. Find the base rate per segment for your destination country.
  2. Find the carrier surcharge page (search "carrier fees" on the provider's site) and add it per segment.
  3. Add number rental per month.
  4. Add 10DLC registration if you send to the US: brand, campaign vetting, monthly campaign fee.
  5. Multiply the per-segment total by your messages, remembering that a message over 160 GSM-7 characters (or 70 with an emoji or non-Latin script) bills as two or more segments. The SMS length calculator counts segments for you.

If step 5 lands above $14.99 and you send under 5,000 a month, a phone-based plan is cheaper.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest SMS API?

By published US rate, Bird at $0.0035 a segment and Telnyx at $0.004 (both checked September 15, 2026). By monthly total at small and mid volume, textbee: $0 for up to 300 messages, $14.99 for up to 5,000, $29.99 for up to 25,000, with no per-message, carrier or number fees.

Is there a free SMS API?

Yes, one that sends to real numbers: textbee's Free plan, 300 messages a month and 50 a day, no card. Cloud providers offer trial credits that expire and, in most cases, only send to verified numbers while on trial.

Why is Twilio more expensive than the sticker price?

The $0.0083 base rate is about half the real cost. Add the $0.0045 carrier fee, $1.15 a month for the number and 10DLC registration, and 5,000 messages come to about $65 a month plus registration. The Twilio pricing breakdown itemizes it.

Does cheap SMS mean worse delivery?

Not between the cloud providers in this list; Telnyx and Bird route over the same carriers as Twilio. A phone-based gateway delivers like a person texting from that phone, which is reliable for transactional volume and gets filtered if you send spam-like patterns.

What about SMS pricing outside the US?

Rates vary by country by a factor of ten or more. The Twilio price table lists Twilio's rate for 27 countries next to a textbee plan, and the SMS gateway by country pages cover local rules.
