Most members do not read every church email, and the bulletin only reaches the people who were there last week. A text gets read within minutes. That makes it the right channel for a service time change, a volunteer reminder or a snow-day cancellation.

What a good church text includes

1. Who it is from. Start or end with the church or group name. A new visitor may not have your number saved yet.
2. What is happening. The service, event, rehearsal or change.
3. When and where. Day, time and place. Add the address for events off site.
4. One next step. Reply C to confirm, reply YES to save a seat, or follow a link.
5. One segment. Keep it under 160 characters, with no emoji and no curly quotes. Longer texts split into two or three messages and count two or three times against your plan.

How to text your whole congregation from your church's number

A group chat is the wrong tool for a whole congregation. Everyone sees everyone's number, and one "Amen!" sets off 200 notifications. A church texting service sends each person their own private text, and replies come back only to the church.

textbee turns an Android phone with the church SIM into that service. The texts go out from the church's own number, through the phone's carrier plan. Here is the setup:

1. Install textbee on an Android phone with the church SIM and link it to your account. An old phone that stays in the church office works well.
2. Keep the member list in a spreadsheet with name, phone and group columns. The group column holds values like youth-parents, worship-team, ushers or members.
3. Send to everyone or to one group. Filter the sheet by the group column, export the rows as CSV, and upload the file in the dashboard under Messaging > Bulk Send. 4. Read the replies. Replies land on the church phone and in the textbee dashboard, so the office can answer "Can I bring my neighbor?" from a computer.
5. Automate the regular texts if you want. Keep the roster in Google Sheets and use Zapier or Make to send each volunteer their reminder on a schedule. The Make, Zapier and n8n guide walks through it.

How long a send takes. One phone sends roughly 10 to 15 messages a minute. A text to 300 members takes about 20 to 30 minutes to go out. Send the Saturday reminder at 2 PM and it is done well before evening. For time-critical cancellations, text the affected group first, not the whole list.

What it costs. The Free plan covers 300 messages a month (up to 50 a day). Pro is $14.99 a month for up to 5,000 messages, and Scale is $29.99 a month for up to 25,000 (pricing, checked September 2026). A church with 250 members that sends 4 texts a month sends 1,000 messages, so it fits Pro with plenty of room for volunteer and youth texts. The messages come out of the SIM's own plan, which on an unlimited-text plan adds nothing. There is no number to rent.

Consent. Text the people who gave you their number for church updates. A connect card, a sign-up form or a volunteer form counts. Keep separate lists by what people signed up for (youth parents, worship team, whole church), honor STOP replies the same day, and add "Reply STOP to opt out" to general announcements and giving texts. Is there free church text messaging?

Volunteer rosters, youth updates and small group texts go only to the people involved, so they do not add to everyone's count. If members start replying STOP, you are sending too often.
